Summer Camp Update, Mount Hood, OR
The temperatures on Mt Hood took a change for the better on Friday with a weather system moving in cooling the hot temperatures that sent us swimming in the glacial run-off in the afternoon on Wednesday. Four days of SL drills and one day of GS rounded out the first half of the camp. As we inch closer to September cooler sub 0 C temperatures are expected with solid snow conditions and no salting of the hill necessary.

3rd Annual Tour of Manitoba Concludes
In it's third year the MAST Tour of Manitoba followed the same route as 2009 through Asessippi, Roblin, Gilbert Plains, Dauphin, Clear Lake, Erickson and Neepawa. The MAST memebers continued their assault on the 280 km course in better time than last year. The next MAST/CWG camp will be in Mt Hood, Oregon on the Palmer Glacier from August 21-September 3.
Coach Kendra Receives Ca$h!
Sport Manitoba has selected Kendra Gierys of Winnipeg Alpine Racers as one of five athletes and three coaches to receive Women to Watch grants.
The athletes are speedskater Elise MacDonald, cyclist Karlee Gendron, Connor Deneka for air rifle, basketball player Brittany Wiebe and synchronized swimmer Megan Rutherford. The coaches are Heather Carson, water polo, Kendra Gierys, alpine skiing and Haylee O'Neill, softball.
Sport Manitoba works in partnership with provincial sport organizations and Coaching Manitoba to provide a monthly grant of $500 to a female athlete, team, official or volunteer, which is designed to assist them in enhancing their career.
The $500 coach's grant is used to assist in further developing the skills necessary to attain a higher level of coaching or increased level of coaching experience.
MASD Fitness Testing - May 15, 2010
The MASD Fitness Testing is scheduled for May 15 at West St Paul School.
Testing. Open to all ages 9 & older. The testing will run from 9 am until noon. Located at 3740 Main St in West St Paul, just North of the Perimeter.
Summit Ski Club Demolishes Competition, Wins Second Straight Club Title
The Summit Ski Club took home the Overall Club Title for the year with a total of 2825 points, a whopping 400 points ahead of the next club. Winnipeg Alpine Racers totaled 2412 points with La Riviere at 2166 points in third. Asessippi, Westman and Bottineau finishing respectively.
Hislop Records Best Ever Manitoba Performance at Whistler Cup!
Tori Hislop (Summit), named to Team Canada's Whistler Cup, finished 14th in the Kombi event and 23rd in the SL. Gage Martinook (Asessippi) was able to finish 26th in the k1 Male SL. Other members of Team toba competing in Whistler were: Alex Campbell, Sara Telles-Langdon, Vincent Berg, Maclean Hatherly and Max Gaber.
Powder Sucks!
20 cms of the white stuff fell in Whistler overnight, the exact thing that was not needed for Super G training. Maclean Hatherly and Max Gaber were forced to take a few runs on GS skis on Ptarmigan instead of getting that optimal preperation for the Super G races tomorrow.
MASD Provincial Championships
La Riviere retains/shares Speed Queen Crown- Alexandrea Murray of La Riviere was able to tie Tara Campbell of WAR for the Super G Provincial Title. Glynnis Eyford of Summit was able to capture the Super Combined title. Tara Campbell was able to capture the SL and GS crowns on her way to the Overall Manitoba Cup as well.
A 3-way battle for the Overall MB Cup took place with Jake Wall (WAR), Will Lyne (Lar) and Steven Horbas (Sum) fought for the silver cup! In the end Steven Horbas was able to retain his Overall Title by the narrowest of margins, 1 point and 6 hundredths of a second! William Lyne of La Rivere was in command during the weekend claiming the Super G, Super Combined and GS titles, while Horbas held on to a massive first run lead in the SL to stop Lyne from sweeping the weekend.
K1 Westerns, Manitoba on Podium & Top 10
Towering above the town of Banff, Mt. Norquay's slopes gave up a silver medal in the combi event (a mix between slalom and giant slalom) to 12-year-old East St. Paul skier Tori Hislop of the Summit Ski Club (Spring Hill Winter Park) at the recent Western Canadian K1 championships.
The Grade 7 student at Robert Andrews School competed against 60 of the top 11- and 12-year-old female alpine ski racers from Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C.
"Going out there I had a goal, and it was always to make the top 10, and I accomplished that goal," she said. "I was always scouting out the competition, and I thought I could take them. It just seemed that I work just as hard as them, and my coaching is just as good."
Sara Telles-Langdon, 11, also of Summit, skied to a personal best of 24th in the Kinder combi. Summit's Evan Madill's best result was also the combi where he ranked 40th, and Brandon's (Assessippi Ski Club) Gage Martinook skied to a top 10 in the slalom, earning a ninth overall and 16th in the Kombi.
Stockford Stops One Short of a set, doubles up on Silver
Alexis Stockford fell one medal short of collecting the entire set of medals from the Thuder Bay Miele Can-Am Superior Cup. Alexis fell short by only .25 of a second in the final GS on the weekend, taking home a bronze and two silvers. Other highlights from the series were Alexandrea Murray, Will Lyne & Tara Campbell all reaching the top 15. Colin Ross having his second run of SL being the 15th fastest time, Evan Kettler finishing 3 of 4 races, Taylor Kirton, Steven Horbas, Zach Wall and Bryant Roulston all achieving personal goals from the weekend. The next stop on the FIS tour is La Crosse, WI were the MAST will race on the banks of the mighty Mississippi river
